Frontiers in Writing
CONTEST
Last year, we received over 600 entries in 14 categories and
awarded over $3,500 in prize money. This year promises to be
even better with 17 categories.
Don’t delay—get your entry in today!

Entries must be postmarked by
March 1, 2007.
Published authors will score the first round in each category.
The top six will be forwarded to editors and agents for final
round judging. Cash prizes and certificates will be awarded to
the top three scores in each category; honorable mention
certificates will be awarded to fourth-place.
Novel & Book Categories Cash Prizes:
1st place — $100
2nd place — $75
3rd place — $50
Other Prose and Poetry Categories Cash Prizes:
1st place — $75
2nd place — $50
3rd place — $25
There must be at least ten (10) entries in any category in order
to qualify for cash prizes in that category. In any category
with fewer than ten (10) entries but at least three (3) entries,
the finals judge may award a first place and one honorable
mention, at his or her discretion.

One BEST OF SHOW also will be awarded from among the first
place winners in all categories.
CONTEST CATEGORIES
Novels:

First 10 pages, beginning with prologue and/or first chapter,
plus a synopsis of no more than 2 additional double-spaced
pages.

Category #1: Mainstream
Category #2: Mystery, Suspense or Thriller
Category #3: Historical or Western
Category #4: Romance
Category #5: Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror
Category #6: Juvenile
Category #7: Young Adult

Other Prose Categories:

Category #8: Short Story — 2000 words or less
Category #9: Nonfiction Article or Essay — 2000 words or
less
Category #10: Nonfiction Book — first 10 pages,  plus a single-
spaced, 1-page query, and an outline of 4 double-spaced pages
or less. No illustrations, charts, etc.
Category #11: Screenplay — first 10 pages, screenplay format,
plus a double-spaced, 3-page treatment
Category #12: Memoir — Nostalgia or Reminiscence, 2000
words or less
Category #13: Juvenile Short (fiction or non-fiction) — short
story, picture book text or article, 2000 words or less
Category #14: Young Adult Short (fiction or nonfiction) —
short story or article, 2000 words or less

Poetry Categories:

Category #15: Poetry Short — rhymed or unrhymed, single-
spaced, 20 lines or less
Category #16: Poetry Long — rhymed or unrhymed, single-
spaced, 21 to 60 lines
Category #17: Poetry Chapbook — single-spaced; total length
20 to 40 pages, numbered; no limit on the length of each
poem, but if more than 38 lines (including title line and
spaces) may use more than one page (do not vary 12 point font
to get more than 38 lines per page); each poem should be
titled; all the poems should be specifically or loosely centered
around a theme, and the overall manuscript should be titled.
Note: the entry fee and prizes are the same for this category as
for novels.

In the short and long poetry categories, line counts do not
include the title line or the spaces between stanzas.
